04/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – Six young Portuguese people supported by the NGO Global Legal Action Network took their case to the European Court of Human Rights on Thursday 3 September by filing suit against 33 countries, including the EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland, Russia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine on the grounds that they are “fuelling the climate crisis”. Filed just after Portugal recorded its hottest July in 90 years, the complaint alleges that the governments sued are failing to implement the emission reductions needed to safeguard the young claimants’ future. The suit is based on the ‘Climate Action Tracker’ assessment, carried out by Climate Analytics and the New Climate Institute, which showed that the policies of these 33 countries are too weak to achieve the overall objective of the Paris agreement.
