On Friday 28 August, the European Commission adopted a Draft Amending Budget (no. 8) for 2020 to provide €6.2 billion to counteract the negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic in the European Union.
This Draft Amending Budget, which still needs to be adopted by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament, includes a €1.09 billion enhancement in order to accommodate the additional requirements in payment appropriations for the Emergency Support Instrument to fund the Covid-19 vaccine strategy.
There is also provision for €5.2 billion to cover the additional needs of Cohesion Policy in 2020 following adoption of the Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative Plus (CRII+).
The Commission has carried out an in-depth analysis for each programme of the forecasts submitted by Member States before the end of July 2020. It believes that an increase of €5.1 billion in payment appropriations is needed to cover all payment requests anticipated in 2020.
