Open letter asking European Medicines Agency to accept requests by e-mail

Gathered at the initiative of Access Info Europe approximately 30 civil society and academic organisations asked the European Medicines Authority (EMA) to accept requests for access to documents sent by e-mail, in an open letter dated 28 August.

Such a request is in line with the official policy of the EMA and the Regulation (1049/2001) governing access to documents of institutions of the European Union, according to the signatories. Indeed, the Regulation does not allow an EU institution or body to set a requirement stating that an application for access to a document may only be made via its website.

In these unique times, it is particularly important that the work of the Agency, as well as of other health-related institutions, be as transparent as possible. Such transparency contributes to knowledge-sharing, to combatting fraud and corruption in the health sector, and thus helps to save lives”, emphasised the signatories.

The European Agency has still not responded to an initial identical request made in August 2019.
