Coceral predicts 5% drop in European grain crop in 2020

In its fourth forecast published on Monday, 24 August, Coceral—the European association representing trade in cereals, rice, animal feed, oilseeds, olive oil, and oils—predicts a total grain crop in the EU27 (and the UK) of 295.5 million tonnes, compared to 311.6 million tonnes in 2019.

The drop is estimated to be just over 5%.

Wheat production (excluding durum) is expected to amount to 129.1 million tonnes in 2020, compared to 146.8 million tonnes last year.

The EU barley production for 2020 is expected to reach 62.5 million tonnes, which is a slight increase (62.1 million tonnes in 2019).

Estimates for the EU corn crop in 2020 are revised downwards from 66.8 million tonnes in previous forecasts to 64.6 million tonnes. Last year’s crop was 64.8 million tonnes.

Rapeseed production forecasts have been revised upwards from 16.5 million tonnes to 17 million tonnes (16.9 million tonnes in 2019). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
