The European Commission announced on Tuesday 25 August a second action programme in 2020, worth €31.6 million, to assist the Turkish Cypriot community with projects promoting the reunification of Cyprus.
The programme will support key infrastructure projects, environmental protection and the improvement of the electricity grid used by the Turkish Cypriot community. It will contribute to the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, the plan will seek to improve not only food security, but also the quality of statistical data.
The programme will furthermore continue to provide funding to the Committee on Missing Persons and the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. More broadly, it will seek to strengthen island-wide cooperation between NGOs by encouraging new activities between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. Finally, it will fund a scholarship program for young people from both communities.
This is in addition to the €5 million that was approved at the beginning of the year. (Original version in French by Pascal Hansens)
