Two EU-funded flights delivered 82.5 tonnes of medical equipment

Two flights, operated on 19 and 21 August by the European Union, Spain and Portugal and coordinated with the Venezuelan authorities, delivered 82.5 tonnes of medical equipment to humanitarian organizations to help the population in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

This equipment includes hygiene and health protection kits and water purification equipment, which will be used in health care units or distributed directly to the most affected families.

On the political front, despite contacts made in August by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, the European Union considers that it is not in a position at this stage to send an observation mission to the Venezuelan parliamentary elections scheduled for December.

According to Mr Borrell, such a mission could only be deployed if certain minimum requirements and standards demanded by the opposition to the Maduro regime were guaranteed, such as an overhaul of the National Electoral Council and the fair and secure participation of all political parties in the parliamentary elections.

It should be noted that Argentina has joined the International Contact Group, which is made up of fifteen European and Latin American countries and charged with helping to create the conditions for a peaceful solution to the Venezuelan political crisis. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
