United Kingdom and United States welcome adoption of sanctions by EU

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed on Thursday 30 July the adoption by the EU earlier in the day of sanctions against those responsible for cyber attacks (see EUROPE 12539/2).

In a statement, Mr Raab announced that the UK would continue to implement the sanctions regime against cyber attacks against the EU at the end of the transition period through its own restrictive measures regime.

These sanctions, which are now in force in the United Kingdom, send a strong signal that malicious cyber activity against our European partners and allies has consequences”, he warned.

Mr Raab added that his country was committed to working with its international partners to agree on responsible behaviours and promote international security and stability in cyberspace.

Welcoming the European announcement, which he called “an important milestone”, Pompeo said the United States supports efforts to promote accountability for malicious cyber activities by bad actors.

He added that his country would continue to work with the EU, its Member States and many likeminded countries to promote a framework of responsible State behaviour in cyberspace. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
