EU extends restrictive measures by six months

The Council of the EU renewed sanctions for six months on Thursday 30 July against 14 individuals and 21 groups or entities linked to terrorist activities.

These persons, groups and entities are subject to the freezing of funds and other financial assets in the EU and EU operators are prohibited from making funds and economic resources available to them.

The EU Council established this list, revised at least every six months, for the first time in 2001, after the terrorist attacks of 11 September, in order to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1373/2001.

In addition, the EU has added one person to its sanctions list against the Islamic State Organisation (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida and against persons and entities associated with or supporting them.

It is the Frenchman Bryan d'Ancona, who has gone to Syria for jihad, and who is already subject to a freeze of his assets in France since May 2020.

Under this regime, the sanctions consist of a travel ban and an assets freeze. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
