European Parliament gives go-ahead for extension of European network for cooperation between public employment services until end of 2027

The European Parliament’s Committee on Employment and Social Affairs adopted on Wednesday 24 June, by a large majority (49 votes in favour, 2 against, 3 abstentions), the draft report by Manuel Pizarro (S&D, Portugal) on improving the network for cooperation between public employment services (PES) and the extension of the network until 31 December 2027.

In general, the adopted compromise amendments insist on the modernisation of public employment services through the promotion of gender equality and the integration of workers with disabilities. They highlight the importance of sustainable development goals, the European pillar of social rights, and the European Green Deal. The issue of coordination of social security systems is also foregrounded.

On the basis of a positive evaluation (see EUROPE 11803/13), the European Commission had proposed amending the Decision (573/2014) on the improvement of cooperation between PES in order to extend this cooperation for 7 years after 2020 (see EUROPE 12327/18).

The EU Council adopted its position under the Finnish Presidency of the EU Council in November 2019. (Original version in French by Pascal Hansens)
