10/06/2020 (Agence Europe) – The EU welcomed the transfer of Sudanese warlord Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-al-Rahman, also know as Ali Kushayb, to the International Criminal Court on Tuesday 9 June as “an important step in the search for justice and accountability in Darfur”. Ali Kushayb was indicted by the ICC in April 2007 for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur between 2003 and 2004. In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service stressed that “setting up transitional justice and accountability for past atrocities remains one of the key tasks for the transitional authorities in Sudan”. The statement declares that “the EU is strongly committed to preventing crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide, and to avoiding impunity for the perpetrators of such crimes”. (AN)
