Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria want an urgency and solidarity clause in asylum and migration pact

10/06/2020 (Agence Europe)Greece, together with Bulgaria and Cyprus, has also written to the European Commission about the future Pact on Asylum and Migration, as reported in the Greek media. In a letter dated 4 June, the Greek Minister Delegate for Migration and Asylum, Geórgios Koumoutsákos, called for an “urgency and flexibility clause” to be included in the Pact. This clause should strengthen the capacities of frontline countries to manage exceptional migratory circumstances by activating preventive mechanisms. The frontline countries guarding the common borders must be able to show flexibility in times of crisis and granting this flexibility would be a proof of “European solidarity”, says the minister. The Commission is reportedly considering including a special regulation for the management of migratory and health crises in its Pact. (SP)
