27/05/2020 (Agence Europe) – ClientEarth and Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) are suing Germany in German courts for its failure to control emissions of air pollutants across the country, the NGOs announced on Wednesday 27 May. The aim is to compel authorities to take immediate action to comply with the requirements of Directive 2016/2284/EU on national emission ceilings. Since 2010, ammonia (NH3) emissions in Germany have soared, and the country has admitted that it is on track to miss its legal targets for 2030 for ammonia, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). “The ongoing breaches of NO2 limits in cities across Germany have prompted multiple court rulings against authorities, as well as an EU-level case against the country itself”, says Caroline Douhaire, a lawyer representing the NGOs.
