20/05/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission will publish the results of its assessment on the use of forest biomass for energy production by the end of 2020, according to the EU’s new biodiversity strategy, presented on Wednesday 20 May (see separate news item). “These results will inform the Commission’s policy-making, including the review and revision, where necessary, of the level of ambition of the Renewable Energy Directive [...] set for 2021”, the document goes on to say. In order to ensure that EU bioenergy rules are in line with the Green Deal, the Commission will also in 2021 develop “operational guidelines on the application of the new sustainability criteria on forest biomass for energy” in line with the Renewable Energy Directive. The institution will also establish a path for eliminating biofuels that present a high risk of land use change by 2030. (DG)
