British MPs bury free movement of European workers for good

19/05/2020 (Agence Europe)British MPs passed a law on 18 May ending the free movement of workers with the EU, according to AFP. The law abolishes, from 2021, the specific rights of citizens from the European Economic Area (European Union plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) and Switzerland to immigrate to the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom has, in fact, refused to adopt the principle of freedom of movement and the other freedoms of the single market when it becomes a non-Member State on 1 January next year; this is, however, in theory, as there is potential for the transitional period to be extended. The new system would be based on a points-based model for immigration to the country and a focus on the most skilled workers. (SP)
