EU RESPONSE TO COVID-19 / Citizenship

Covid-19, only 10,000 Europeans remain to be repatriated with EU aid

18/05/2020 (Agence Europe)Of the 600,000 EU citizens who were stranded in non-EU countries due to travel restrictions as a result of the coronavirus, only “around 10,000” are waiting to be repatriated, which is “a small number”, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on 15 May. He was speaking at the end of the videoconference of European Foreign Ministers, not hiding his satisfaction. “Mission accomplished”, he said, assuring that the EU “continues its efforts” to coordinate consular assistance in non-Member States so that the last citizens wishing to return home can do so. Of the 590,000 citizens already repatriated, 60,000 have been repatriated through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (270 flights, 75% co-financed by the Commission). (AN)
