18/05/2020 (Agence Europe) – New escalation in the trade dispute between the United States and China: On Friday 15 May, the American authorities announced new measures to curb the ability of the Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei to develop semiconductors abroad using American technology. The U.S. Department of Commerce states that it has “strategically and precisely targeted Huawei's semiconductor purchases, which are directly derived” from U.S. know-how. It added that they believed Huawei had so far managed to circumvent the restrictions imposed on it since 2019. This is an “arbitrary and pernicious” decision that “will have consequences for a large number of industries around the world”, Huawei reacted in a statement. “The United States is using its own technological power to crush companies in other countries,” the company added.
