05/05/2020 (Agence Europe) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Monday 4 May, the appointment of Ambassador Ronald J. Gidwitz as Acting U.S. Representative to the European Union. Mr Gidwitz, 75, has served as U.S. Ambassador to Belgium since July 2018 and will continue to serve in that capacity. “In his capacity as Acting Representative, Ambassador Gidwitz will advance a strong U.S.-EU partnership, especially in achieving a speedy recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, while promoting our shared interests and values across the globe”, Pompeo said in his statement. Since the departure of Ambassador Gordon Sondland last February, the number 2 of the mission, Mark Libby, has been acting as Chargé d'Affaires (see EUROPE 12422/7). (CG)
