05/05/2020 (Agence Europe) – The Bulgarian Supreme Administrative Court has suspended the execution of Pirin National Park's new management plan, which would have allowed construction in 66% and logging in 48% of the Natura 2000 site listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, WWF announced on Tuesday 5 May. This final decision is a "a milestone for nature conservation", WWF Bulgaria highlights, welcoming "setting new standards and a new court practice in the field, which will positively impact protected areas and Natura 2000 sites in the country in the future". WWF had been campaigning since 2016 (see EUROPE 11526/12). In December 2018, thousands of Bulgarians demonstrated against the construction of new ski facilities and the logging of one of the oldest forests in Europe. (AN)
