Financial aid to airlines is expected to reach €26 billion

The airline bailout tracker published by the NGOs Greenpeace, Transport & Environment (T&E) and Carbon Market Watch listing the financial aid allocated to airlines in the EU (see EUROPE 12472/23) was updated on Thursday 30 April. The three NGOs have now estimated the total amount of aid granted to these companies at €26 billion.

A total of €11.5 billion has been confirmed by seven national governments and should benefit around a dozen companies. An additional €14.6 billion for some ten other companies and subsidiaries is under discussion.

On Monday 4 May, the European Commission approved the €7 billion support plan that the French State intends to grant to Air France (see separate news item). Aid that “comes with non-binding requests to reduce emissions on domestic flights and buy more fuel-efficient planes”, the NGOs say.

However, all three deplore the fact that such State Aid is not systematically accompanied by binding social and environmental conditions for companies and call on the European Commission to publish guidelines to this effect.
