29/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – Any financial aid provided to airlines must “be made conditional on socially responsible behaviour”, said Jon Horne, the president of the European Cockpit Association (ECA), on Monday 27 April. In Europe, nearly one in five pilots is employed through a temporary employment agency, without minimum wage guarantees and without access to those protections enjoyed by direct employees, explained the ECA. In particular, the association points out that the leave and short-time working programmes set up in response to the crisis will not help these workers and it views this as a “wake-up call”. The Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, was questioned on this subject on Tuesday 28 April (see EUROPE 12476/2) by MEP Ciarán Cuffe (Greens/EFA, Ireland), whose group also advocates making State Aid conditional upon respecting the welfare of workers in the sector.
