17/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – With the recent outbreak of fires threatening the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the Emergency Mapping Service of the European Earth observation programme Copernicus has been activated and the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite mission has taken images of the fires and smoke and mapped the scorched earth area, the European Space Agency announced in a statement issued on Friday 17 April. According to the data collected, the situation is under control thanks to heavy rains that fell the day before, the Agency announced. At the same time, the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission has also recorded fires and the data is displayed in the Sentinel-3 World Fire Atlas.
