EU RESPONSE TO COVID-19 / Justice

Eurojust ensures that it will remain fully operational during COVID-19 pandemic

Eurojust, the EU’s criminal justice cooperation agency, confirmed on Friday 3 April that it remains fully operational during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to support national authorities in the fight against serious cross-border crime.

Eurojust has adapted its infrastructure and critical processes so that its laptops can provide secure access to the case management system and enable advanced videoconferencing, including interpretation through secure channels, it explained.

As supporting figures, Eurojust reports that, between 13 and 31 March, 202 new cases were opened by Eurojust’s national members, a slight decrease compared to the previous week, when the Eurojust building was still fully accessible.

During the same period, eight coordination meetings have also taken place, mostly via secure videoconference, and four more meetings are planned in the next two weeks, it said.

Justice needs to be done under all circumstances”, said Eurojust President Ladislav Hamran. According to him, this crisis shows that the fight against cross-border organised crime requires “a profound digitalisation” of their working process. (Original version in French by Marion Fontana)
