26/03/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 25 March, the Chair of the European Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights, Maria Arena, and the Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries, Andrea Cozzolino, denounced the one-year prison sentence handed down on appeal to Karim Tabbou, of the Hirak movement, although he was due to be released on 26 March after serving a one-year sentence for “undermining the integrity of the national territory”. This sentence, in the absence of his lawyers, “goes against his right to a fair trial, which he enjoys under Algerian law and international conventions ratified by Algeria”, they stressed in a statement. “Karim Tabbou's judicial harassment is incomprehensible and contrary to the rule of law”, they stated critically.
