28/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – “Mr Ferrer’s right to a fair trial must be strictly respected during the proceedings”, said the spokesman for the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, on Thursday 27 February. Imprisoned and subject to solitary confinement since 1 October 2019, Cuban political opponent José Daniel Ferrer, head of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (Unpacu), is the subject of an “trial on assault charges” which began on Wednesday 26 February, when, according to the EU, “information available on his case suggests that Mr Ferrer is on trial for the peaceful expression of his views”. The EU delegation to Cuba was not allowed to attend the trial. Last November, the European Parliament called for the release of Mr Ferrer (see EUROPE 12379/24). (MB)
