10/02/2020 (Agence Europe) – Long described as Angela Merkel’s successor, German Christian Democratic Party (CDU) President Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said on Monday 10 February that she would not run for the German chancellery in the federal elections scheduled for autumn 2021. The current Minister of Defence remains in her post in the coalition government formed with the Social Democrats and she will remain President of the party until her successor has been designated by the campaigners. In particular, she is paying for the support that some Christian Democrat elected representatives recently gave, together with the German far right, to the election of Thomas Kemmerich as head of the Land of Thuringia, even though this German liberal has since resigned (see EUROPE 12420/4).
