21/01/2020 (Agence Europe) – The EU Council formally adopted its position on the review of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on Tuesday 21 January as an 'A' item of the Ecofin Council. The Commission must submit a report on the evaluation and review of the regulation to the European Parliament and the EU Council by 25 May 2020, taking into account the positions of the co-legislators. The GDPR Regulation provides that this evaluation should, in particular, cover the application and functioning of Chapter V on the transfer of personal data to non-Member States, as well as Chapter VII on cooperation and coherence. Nevertheless, in its text (see EUROPE 12405/14), the EU Council asks the Commission to adopt an “overview” and to go beyond these two chapters, addressing in particular the resources of national authorities or new technologies.
