Consensus expected in European Parliament on resolution rejecting revolving door instance involving Adam Farkas

MEPs, meeting in the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg, are expected to adopt without difficulty on Thursday 16 January a resolution expressing their concerns about the revolving door instance involving Adam Farkas, Executive Director of the European Banking Authority (EBA), who will join the Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) as Chief Executive from February 2020 (see EUROPE 12356/9).

The draft resolution, adopted unanimously on 12 December in the Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) (see EUROPE 12389/19), should be the only text put to the vote on Thursday, several parliamentary sources confirmed to EUROPE on Tuesday 14 January.

At the time of going to press, several political groups in Parliament had not yet decided whether or not to table amendments to the text. According to one of our interlocutors, however, there should be a few. Parliament political groups are united in condemning cases of the revolving door in the EU and, in particular, that of Mr Farkas, our contact explained.

The final text should therefore continue to consider the restrictions imposed by the EBA on Mr Farkas' departure as too light and ask the EBA to reconsider its authorization decision. If Mr Farkas' transfer to the AFME is not blocked, MEPs are prepared to ban him from the European Parliament, our parliamentary source warned.
