Spanish judiciary calls for waiver of parliamentary immunity for Mr Puigdemont and Mr Toni Comín

10/01/2020 (Agence Europe)Spanish magistrate Pablo Llarena has decided to uphold national, European and international arrest warrants against Catalan separatists Carles Puigdemont and Antoni Comín and to ask the European Parliament to suspend their parliamentary immunity, the Spanish Supreme Court said in a statement issued on Friday 10 January. On the same day, according to Agence France Presse, Oriol Junqueras sent a letter to the President of the European Parliament through Spanish Green MEP Diana Riba, asking the European Parliament to confirm his MEP status, which had been denied him the day before by the Spanish Supreme Court (see EUROPE 12400/4), and to allow him to sit in the European Parliament. For its part, the European Commission, in the press room, while reiterating its respect for the Spanish Constitution, recalled that “all Member States must respect the decisions of the Court of Justice”.
