10/01/2020 (Agence Europe) – Lisbon will officially become the European Green Capital 2020 on Saturday 11 January. European Commission Executive Vice President Frans Timmermans and Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius will be in Lisbon for the opening ceremony of the event, which will see Oslo hand over the torch to the Portuguese capital for the resumption of the title. Frans Timmermans will also speak at a youth assembly together with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa and the Mayor of Lisbon Fernando Medina. A visit to a wastewater treatment facility is also on the agenda. Prior to the launch ceremony of the European Year 2020, Virginijus Sinkevičius will meet the Portuguese Minister for Environment and Climate Action, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, and the Minister for the Sea, Ricardo Serrão Santos.
