European Aviation Safety Agency recommends avoiding Iraqi airspace

09/01/2020 (Agence Europe)Following the recent Iranian missile launches against US military bases in Iraq, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) announced, on Wednesday 8 January, that it had recommended to the various national authorities in charge of civil aviation to avoid commercial flights and other operations in Iraqi airspace “as a precautionary measure”. Asked about this at the daily midday meeting with journalists on Thursday 9 January, the European Commission said that several Member States had already sent information to their national airlines and that several had already taken steps to revise their routes accordingly. The Commission also announced that an extraordinary meeting of civil aviation experts will be held on Friday 10 January, with the aim of “assessing the threats that could arise from the escalation of tensions in the region and to determine the next steps to be taken”.
