09/01/2020 (Agence Europe) – On 6 January, the European Commission announced that the regulation on the internal market for electricity (2019/943) entered into force on 1st January 2020. As part of the Clean Energy for All Europeans legislative package, this regulation aims to establish the fundamental principles of an efficient electricity market. According to the Commission, it allows for better integration of national markets and increased capacity for cross-border trade. Replacing the former Electricity Regulation (714/2009), it should also provide better access to renewable energy, ensuring a better response to demand and storage. In order to improve the security of electricity supply, the Regulation also includes rules for better coordination and closer cooperation between transmission system operators. Finally, it puts an end to State Aid that supports electricity generation infrastructure using polluting energy sources. (DG)
