Second round of presidential election promises to be close

03/01/2020 (Agence Europe)Croatian voters are expected to decide between the outgoing Croatian President, Christian Democrat Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, and Social Democrat Zoran Milanović, former Prime Minister of the country, on Sunday 5 January, in what observers say will be a close second round of presidential elections. In the first round, Mr Milanović had beaten Mrs Grabar-Kitarović by obtaining 29.5% of the votes against 26.6% for his rival. One of the keys to the election was the first-round votes won by Miroslav Škoro, described as the 'patriotic singer'. On the strength of the good score obtained, he announced the creation of a political party. On Thursday 9 January, in Zagreb, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, will meet Mrs Grabar-Kitarović in the context of the launch of the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. (MB)
