19/12/2019 (Agence Europe) – The Council of the EU adopted on Thursday 19 December, without debate, conclusions on the management of radioactive waste generated by non-energy nuclear technologies, such as spent fuel from research reactors, radioactive waste from radioisotope production, radioactive waste from hospitals and others. The conclusions underline the importance of minimising radioactive waste and ensuring responsible and safe handling, storage and disposal of waste. While the conclusions further specify that it is the responsibility of the Member States to have a national policy for the management of radioactive waste, they also indicate that, in cases where national solutions are not available or possible, shared services and facilities could be a viable option.
