11/12/2019 (Agence Europe) – The Chair of the European Parliament Sub-Committee on Human Rights, Maria Arena, welcomed on Wednesday 11 December the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) the day before calling on Turkish authorities to immediately release philanthropist Osman Kavala (see EUROPE 12283/18). "We strongly encourage the Turkish authorities to follow up the Court's decision positively and to release him without further delay", she said in a statement. Ms Arena was of the opinion that the ECHR decision was in particular “good news (...) for Turkish civil society”. In its judgment, the ECHR denounced the “absence of reasonable suspicion that the has committed an offence”. It found that Turkey had violated the defendant's right to liberty and to safety. (CG)
