On Wednesday 4 December, the European Commission finalized the organisation chart of the new Directorate-General for Industry, Space and Defence (CHALLENGE), of which EUROPE has obtained a copy, under the responsibility of the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.
The Directorate-General should initially bring together about 250 agents, we are told. This is the sum of the staff already in place dedicated to space and defence issues in the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) services.
DG CHALLENGE is expected to continue to grow by recruiting staff in the coming weeks and months. By way of comparison, the Commission's largest Directorates-General, namely the Services for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) or Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO), have about 1 200 staff, we are told.
