On Tuesday, 26 November in Strasbourg, the European Parliament delivered a favourable opinion on the EU Council’s proposals to appoint several members of the European Court of Auditors. There are two new members, and three mandates have been extended (see EUROPE 12368/6).
The new French member of the Court of Auditors, François-Roger Cazala, received 568 votes in favour, 42 against, and 55 abstentions. Mr Cazala is a member and former Vice-Chair of the Board of Auditors of the European Stability Mechanism.
Mrs Joëlle Elvinger, nominated by Luxembourg, obtained 512 votes in favour (79 against and 70 abstentions). Mrs Elvinger is currently a member of Luxembourg’s Chamber of Deputies and a lawyer.
Renewal of mandates. The European Parliament supported (497 votes in favour, 130 against, and 32 abstentions) the renewal of the mandate of the German member, Klaus-Heiner Lehne, who is the current president of the EU Court of Auditors. Mr Lehne has served in Court since 2014.
Finally, Alex Brenninkmeijer, nominated by the Netherlands, received the green light from MEPs (555 votes in favour, 17 against, and 47 abstentions), as did Nikolaos Milionis from Greece (590 votes in favour, 15 against, and 47 abstentions).
Members of the Court of Auditors are appointed by the EU Council for a six-year renewable term after consulting the European Parliament and after being put forward by their respective Member States. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
