21/11/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European External Action Service spokesperson called on the Iranian security forces on Thursday 21 November to exercise "maximum restraint in handling the protests" affecting several Iranian cities and urged protestors demonstrating against the substantial increase in the price of gasoline to demonstrate peacefully. "Socio-economic challenges should be addressed through inclusive dialogue and not through the use of violence (...) Any violence is unacceptable", she said. According to Amnesty International, more than 100 people have already been killed. The spokesperson also considered that the rights to freedom of expression and assembly should be guaranteed. And while the authorities have cut off the Internet since 16 November, the EU expects them to ensure the free flow of information and access to the Internet, the spokesperson warned. (CG)
