18/11/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 15 November, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs welcomed the agreement reached the previous night between a large majority of Chilean political parties, intended to lead to the drafting of a new Constitution in Chile. This “historic” step represents a strong commitment to responding to citizens' demands for “a more inclusive social contract” as expressed through “unprecedented protests”, she said. A referendum will be held in April 2020 to ask Chileans if they want to change the Constitution and, if so, who should be responsible for drafting it. Inherited from the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet, the Chilean Constitution is strongly shaped by neoliberal economic theories, even though it has been amended several times. (MB)
