According to Emmanuel Macron, Alliance is 'brain dead'

07/11/2019 (Agence Europe) – French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday, November 7, in an interview with The Economist, that NATO was in a state of “brain-death”. “You have no coordination of the United States' strategic decision with NATO partners and we are witnessing an act of aggression led by another NATO partner, Turkey, in an area where our interests are at stake, without coordination”, he lamented, adding that “ what had happened [was] a huge problem for NATO”. According to Mr Macron, it is necessary for the Alliance to “now clarify what the strategic goals are”. According to the President, these difficulties make it all the more “essential, on the one hand, to have a European defence system, a Europe that needs to acquire strategic and practical autonomy in the military field. And on the other hand, to reopen a strategic dialogue with Russia, with our eyes open and prepared for it to take a long time”. (CG)
