EU notes “too slow” progress on equal pay day

31/10/2019 (Agence Europe)This year, Equal Pay Day – which marks the day on which women symbolically cease to be paid in relation to their male colleagues for the same position – falls on 4 November. This is an opportunity for the European Commission to reiterate its support for this objective. “It has been 60 years since the principle of equal pay was enshrined in the European treaties, however, the daily reality of women throughout Europe still does not reflect the laws”, deplore Vice-President Timmermans (Fundamental Rights) and Commissioners Thyssen (Employment) and Jourová (Equality) in a joint statement. Referring to “progress being achieved too slowly”, they welcomed the announcement by President-elect Ursula von der Leyen to take action on the issue of wage transparency during the first 100 days of the new mandate (see EUROPE 12356/28).
