Federica Mogherini welcomes opening of first meeting of Syrian constitutional committee

31/10/2019 (Agence Europe)The first meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, eagerly awaited by the European Union (see EUROPE 12336/14), began on Wednesday 30 October in Geneva, under the aegis of the United Nations. The committee, co-chaired by the representative of Damascus, Ahmad Kuzbari, and the opposition, Hadi al Bahra, must establish a process for drafting a new Syrian constitution, as provided for by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254. The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Federica Mogherini, assured the UN Special Envoy, Geir Pedersen, of her support and reiterated the EU’s readiness to support the peace process in Syria. “The Constitutional Committee alone will not resolve the Syrian conflict. Tangible and irreversible steps on all aspects of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 [...] are needed and will be key to unlocking the only viable solution – a political solution”, she warned.
