EU concerned about threat to electoral process posed by 'illegal' dismissal of Prime Minister Gomes

31/10/2019 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 30 October, the EU responded with vigour to the President of Guinea-Bissau, José Mario Vaz’s decision to dismiss by decree the government that would have prepared for the presidential election on 24 November in accordance with the ECOWAS road map. "The illegal attempt to dismiss the Prime-Minister Gomes and his Government threatens to derail the ongoing electoral process. The Government, whose programme was recently approved by a parliamentary majority, is the sole and legitimate executive power in Guinea-Bissau, supported by regional and international partners", said the spokeswoman of the European External Action Service, in a statement. The EU endorses the 29 October ECOWAS Statement and "stands firmly with its international partners in order to ensure free, fair and transparent elections on 24 November 2019". (AN)
