Green Climate Fund, NGOs request generous contributions from European countries that have not yet promised anything

Many European countries, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, have not yet contributed to the replenishment of the Green Climate Fund for the period 2020-2023, CAN Europe laments. These countries are therefore invited by the NGO network to be generous, even if the Paris conference was successful in its fundraising on Friday 25 October, with $9.8 billion promised (see EUROPE 12357/2).

The NGOs are pleased that Luxembourg has joined the countries that have doubled their contribution (United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway).

On the other hand, they are disappointed by Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia and Switzerland, which "have committed themselves well below expectations, after Spain, the Netherlands and Austria" to similar undertakings.

"Several European countries set the bar high and threw real money on the table. This is a good start but in no way adequate to meet the needs on the ground. Countries who pledged below their fair share and failed to live up to their obligations must urgently top up their contributions. All European countries who have not pledged so far need to put money on the table as soon as possible, to help the poorest countries scale up their climate targets in 2020", comments Wendel Trio, Director of CAN Europe. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
