07/10/2019 (Agence Europe) – Following the European Parliament (see EUROPE 12229/2), it was the Council of the European Union that gave the green light on Monday 7 October to the revision of the Directive (2008/96/EC) on road infrastructure safety management. As part of the EU’s efforts to halve the number of road deaths by 2020 compared to 2010, this reform requires Member States to carry out a safety assessment of their entire road network at least every five years. The Romanian Presidency of the EU Council and representatives of Parliament reached agreement on this text on 21 February last (see EUROPE 12199/3). The Directive must now be published in the Official Journal of the EU and will enter into force 20 days after publication. (DG)
