22/08/2019 (Agence Europe) – On 8 August, the European Commission approved €60 million of public support for the deployment and maintenance of infrastructure necessary for ultrafast broadband internet in the remotest rural areas of the Austrian region of Carinthia. The beneficiary of the aid is a new company established and owned by the state of Carinthia. The aim is to enable internet speeds of at least 100 megabits per second for both upload and download in underserved areas, with the possibility of upgrading networks to provide download speeds of up to one gigabit. The aid is in line with the 2013 European guidelines on the deployment of internet broadband, as the Commission believes it helps increase competition in the Austrian market. (MB)
