23/07/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission's Director-general for Trade, Sabine Weyand, visited Washington on 22 and 23 July to convince the US partner to identify an amicable solution to the settlement of two disputes concerning EU support for the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus and US support for Boeing (see EUROPE 12238/1, 12287/12). Invited to a discussion by the American think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies, Ms Weyand recalled that the EU continues to prefer cooperation to conflict and free trade to “managed trade”. She reiterated the EU's call to work hand in hand with Washington to reform the World Trade Organisation and identify ways to better regulate China's behaviour in global markets. Nevertheless, Europeans do not intend to let themselves be taken in, and will retaliate if new tariff sanctions are imposed, she warned. (HD)
