18/07/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Galileo navigation system, still in its pilot phase until 2020, is once again functioning properly, announced the European GNSS Agency (GSA) on Thursday 18 July. “Galileo's initial services have been restored. Commercial users can already see signs of a recovery of Galileo's navigation and synchronization services, although some fluctuations may be observed until further notice”, the EU agency said. On Thursday 11 July, a malfunction in several of Galileo’s ground infrastructure systems disrupted the calculation of the temporal and orbital forecasts required for navigation calculations (see EUROPE 12296/19). The GSA has announced the creation of a commission of inquiry to investigate the origin of the incident. The system had already experienced a failure, albeit of a different nature, which had affected the satellites’ atomic clocks (see EUROPE 11708/8). (PH)
