16/07/2019 (Agence Europe) – As French candidate Jean-François Bohnert, chosen by the EU Council, might drop out of the race for the post of European Chief Prosecutor (see EUROPE 12296/15), the president of the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament, Dacian Cioloș, indicated that France would then support Romanian candidate Laura Codruța Kövesi, selected by the European Parliament. “The French government will inform the Council in the near future that they decided to support Laura Codruța Kövesi, and I hope this will open the way for [a] decision in this direction”, the Romanian elected representative stated on Tuesday, 16 July, at a press conference in Strasbourg. Negotiations between the co-legislators have, in fact, been at a standstill since April. During the last European Parliament plenary session (see EUROPE 12288/26), Mr Cioloș had already felt that appointing Ms Kövesi to the head of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office would geographically rebalance high European offices.
