Promoting rules-based multilateralism and supporting the revitalisation of the United Nations is the EU's ambition as an unwavering partner of the UN - an ambition that will be its guiding principle for the 74th UN General Assembly (September 2019 - September 2020), the EU Council underlined on Monday 15 July in conclusions adopted without debate.
Recognising the importance of the United Nations at the heart of effective multilateralism, the EU and its Member States will focus on three mutually reinforcing priorities: - conflict prevention, peace and security; - a common positive action agenda (including the promotion of human rights, sustainable development and climate action); - commitment to facing global challenges.
“This is a crucial year for sustainable development and climate action at the UN level”, the EU Council said. The Sustainable Development Goals Summit (24-25 September 2019) will provide an opportunity to revive political momentum for the implementation of the 2030 Action Agenda and its SDGs and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development, as well as synergies with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, according to the conclusions.
