09/07/2019 (Agence Europe) – Juan Fernando López Aguilar (S&D, Spain), author of a European Parliament report on humanitarian visas (see EUROPE 12157/17), could be elected on Wednesday 10 July as head of the Civil Liberties Committee (LIBE), several sources said on Tuesday 9 July. He already chaired this parliamentary committee from 2009 to 2014. The committee will also appoint its Vice-Chairs. At this stage, the first vice-presidency may go to Maite Pagazaurtundúa (Renew Europe, Spain). Balázs Hidvéghi (EPP, Hungary) is expected to become third Vice-President. As for the chairs of the Committees on Agriculture (AGRI) and Legal Affairs (JURI) (see EUROPE 12289/2), a sanitary cordon is expected to apply to the positions of Vice-Chairpersons of the Committees. For the LIBE Committee, Jean-Paul Garraud (ID, France) is expected to be replaced by a candidate chosen by the other political groups blocking the far right. (SP)
